Road Update: Westside Greenway in Manhattan: June 16--No real updates on the Greenway, except please be aware that during summer hours, the bikeway can be crowded (except at night). Background: October 17, 2007--Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today broke ground on a new bicycle and pedestrian path in Manhattan's Riverside Park. The 13.3 million project will construct an over-water path, or Riverwalk, that will connect the Hudson River Esplanade from West 83rd to West 91st Streets, creating unbroken waterfront access from 59th Street to 133rd Street. "River Road," NJ: June 16--As many of you may know, PIPC, The NYNJPA and Fort Lee and Edgewater banded together to create road access from the GWB to this heaven of all heavens seven-mile bikeway that runs under the bridge to Alpine, NJ. It is not finished yet, so now you must turn left after arriving on the NJ side, and meander your way either against traffic down the hill, narrowly avoiding speeding cars: or proceed rightish (not right) up the hill, then left down the hill with traffic, to enter "River Road" midway down the hill on the left. No obstructions or closures reported. Many birds and small animals crossing, please ride carefully. PS, if you see a speeding car on this road, call the police at Alpine and let them know. Their number is 201-768-6001. Put it into your cell phone--you might need it! Background: Running from Edgewater to Alpine, New Jersey. Helmets are required on River Road, a Palisades Interstate Park rule. Also, access by bicycle to the Dyckman (Palisades Ave.) entrance is closed to cyclists. If you are caught using this entrance, you risk a $51 ticket and many, many hours wasted in traffic court at the Alpine, NJ headquarters. I conducted a study with 100 cyclists last year indicating that the southernmost entrance is very dangerous for cyclists, and that park employees are perceived as being hostile towards cyclists. This image was recently reinforced by signs erected on the road indicating that cyclists must go single file. The administration of PIPC has chosen to ignore my study. If you would like them to open the middle road to cyclists until a new pathway is built linking the GWB with River Road, please write: Jim Hall, PIPC New Jersey, at jhall@njpalisades.org. Any other reports of bridge and road conditions, please click on "Contact Us". For more updates go to the Palisades Interstate Park/NJ site. Bridge Update: George Washington Bridge: June 16--South Path open The George Washington Bridge footpath/ bike access is currently on the South side and is open to cyclists from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. every day, unless otherwise noted. If you want to voice your concerns about anythiing to do with GWB, email Charlene Allen, callen@panynj.gov Lack of Night time access to the bridge: If you would like to join other people in making complaints about the lack of night time access, join this GW Bridge Google Group for strength in numbers!!!
